con divs es IGUAL, el tema es que deberias usar float, porque no quieres usarlo?

Ten en cuenta que si a uno de los divs le metes padding o margin el porcentual deja de funcionar correctamente puesto que la medida deja de ser real (serian 20% + los 10px que le metiste de padding, por dar un ejemplo...), ahi es cuanto, quizas, se te "descajeta" la pagina...
