‘Tres pisos de pura tecnología’, así podríamos definir al Moscone Center de San Francisco, donde hoy comenzó el Intel Developer Forum de Intel. Cientos de personas de todo el mundo llegaron para conocer el presente de los nuevos avances en tecnologías producidos por Intel, y RedUSERS vino hasta aquí para llevarle a nuestra comunidad las principales noticias de este importante evento.
La primera conferencia la abrió el ya legendario Craig Barrett, ex presidente y CEO de la compañía y actual Charmain of the Board. Para sorpresa de muchos, Barrett no habló de procesadores, nanómetros, ni detalles técnicos. Luego de viajar por más de 30 países viendo cómo la tecnología realmente llega a la gente que la necesita, su charla se basó en el lado humanitario de los adelantos tecnológicos, y cómo estos deben ayudar desarrollar y solucionar temas relacionados con la salud, la educación, la economía y la preservación del medio ambiente.
Para mostrar algunas de las aplicaciones reales que está teniendo la tecnología en busca de mejorar la vida de la gente, especialmente en los lugares donde más se necesita, desfilaron por el escenario, muy imponente por cierto, diferentes personas que presentaron sus propias aplicaciones.
El primero en subir fue Johnny Lee (www.johnnylee.net) quien, basándose en los pizarrones interactivos y la tecnología presente en la consola Wii, desarrolló un sistema de pizarra eléctrica muy económica, ya que se adaptan marcadores comunes (fibras) con el sistema de Wiimote para poder utilizarlos como mouse en la proyección de la imagen de la PC en cualquier superficie. Este proyecto, que está disponible para cualquier interesado, ya fue descargado más de 600.000 veces por profesores que quisieron aprovechar la idea de Lee.
Otro de los proyectos presentados fue el de Matt Flannery, fundador de kiva.org, el primer sitio que permite el financiamiento personal de microemprendimientos de gente de 42 países emergentes. Cualquier persona puede entrar, seleccionar el emprendimiento que desee, y financiarlo en todo y en parte, pagando con tarjeta de crédito o paypal.
Luego llegó el turno del doctor Miguel Angarita, un médico colombiano de la empresa Groove Media and Technologies (www.gmt.com.co), que mostró un sistema mediante el cual se puede acceder, ante un accidente en cualquier parte del mundo, a la historia clínica de una persona en cuestión de segundos. Para esto sólo se necesita un teléfono celular con cámara y un software específico que pueda leer un código en la tarjeta de salud de la persona. De esta manera, quienes atiendan esa emergencia contarán con información importante para evitar errores en los primeros momentos del tratamiento.
Como pueden ver, fue una charla rica e interesante que sirve para ver cómo la tecnología puede realmente ayudar a la gente. Sin embargo, nos quedamos con las ganas de escuchar y ver lo que vinimos a buscar: tecnología en su estado más puro. Pero para eso tendremos que esperar la próxima conferencia, porque si de algo estamos seguros, es que nos iremos de San Francisco satisfechos en este aspecto.
INSPIRE EMPOWER
Siguiendo con su objetivo de ayudar a que la tecnología llegue a la gente que realmente lo necesita, Craig Barrett presentó hoy, en el marco del IDF, el concurso INSPIRE•EMPOWER Challenge, organizado por Intel y que premiará con 100.000 dólares a las ideas más innovadoras para aplicar tecnología en áreas relativas a educación, salud, desarrollo económico, y medioambiente. Aunque todavía no está en marcha, ya es posible pre-registrarse en el sitio http://www.intelchallenge.com.
